The support for Windows 10 ended in October 2025 encompassing increased risk for your company’s IT if you are still using this operating system. The end of support brings new uncertainties to your IT landscape. But there are solutions — and good reasons to take action now. Bordmittel® is happy to support you.

What does the end of support mean?

On October 14, 2025, Microsoft discontinued regular support for Windows 10: no more free security updates, no bug fixes, and no technical support. Your computers will continue to run, but they will increasingly become easy targets for cyberattacks as new vulnerabilities emerge and are no longer patched. Reliability and functional scope will also decline.

Extension: a temporary solution with an expiration date

If this topic has completely passed you by so far, there is a quick emergency solution: in the EU, Microsoft offers a one-year “Extended Security Updates” (ESU) program — free of charge, but only if the device is registered with a current Microsoft account and Windows 10 is fully up to date. This extension is a kind of grace period until October 2026. However, it is only a temporary substitute: by next autumn at the latest, your computer will be left without protection for good, and the problem is merely postponed. More information can be found at Microsoft®

Why should the transition happen now?

There are good reasons to address the upgrade to Windows 11 as soon as possible.
  • Higher security: Windows 10 without support is an open gateway for malware and attackers. Modern operating systems like Windows 11 provide advanced protection mechanisms and regular updates.
  • Better performance: New features, optimized resource usage, and support for modern hardware enable more efficient work and fewer technical issues.
  • Future readiness: Third-party software will increasingly only run on supported operating systems. Upgrading now ensures compatibility and flexibility.
  • Cost advantage: While the support extension is initially free, by autumn 2026 at the latest you may face costs for replacement hardware and unplanned downtime.
  • Avoiding productivity losses: Lack of support can significantly hinder daily work — from system crashes to document loss.

What do companies need to consider during the transition?

When migrating from Windows 10 to a new operating system, several aspects must be considered to ensure a smooth and secure transition. First, it is important to check system requirements, as not every computer automatically meets the requirements for Windows 11 — for example with regard to TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. Older PCs may therefore require upgrades or hardware replacement. In addition, all peripheral devices such as printers and scanners should be tested in advance for compatibility with the new system to avoid unexpected problems during the workday. Data protection is key: before switching, a complete backup and careful planning of data migration are recommended to ensure no important information is lost. Since the new operating system introduces a changed user interface and new features, it is also advisable to offer training for employees and, if necessary, adapt internal workflows. Finally, it must be ensured that the new systems are regularly updated to maintain protection through security updates and access to current features. Only with thorough preparation and professional support can the transition be implemented in a way that optimally protects your company and makes it future-proof.  A short checklist for the transition:
  • Check system requirements: Not every computer automatically meets the hardware requirements for Windows 11.
  • Integrate peripheral devices: Printers, scanners, and other devices should be checked for compatibility before migration.
  • Data backup and migration: Before switching, a full backup and careful planning of data migration are recommended for a smooth transition.
  • Training and adjustment: The new operating system introduces changes to the user interface and new features. Training and adjustments for your teams are advisable.
